A Big Day on Beaver Island:
The Icebreaker Arrives!

We were lucky enough to be on Beaver Island on March 22, 2008 when the US Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay arrived to break ice ahead of the ferry Emerald Isle, loaded with fuel and other supplies for the Island. Here are some photos I took of the event.

The Biscayne Bay pulls into St. James Harbor

Everyone was looking for the boat...

Here she comes...

Approaching the ferry dock

Multiple passes opened up maneuvering room

The end result... big ice cubes!

After the Emerald Isle came close to the pier, a backhoe and front end loader had to clear ice from the slip before she could dock. The Biscayne Bay stands by.
