Moonbounce Bay???
There is an unwritten law that all summer homes on Beaver Island must have a cute name. So, how did we come up with "Moonbounce Bay?"Well, I'm a ham radio operator, and one of the more esoteric things that some hams do is try to communicate via reflecting signals off the moon. This is actually possible, given big antennas, lots of power, and a very sensitive receiver. In other words, it's an engineering challengs, and one I can't resist.
Technically, this is called earth-moon-earth, or EME, but everyone refers to it as moonbounce.
At my home in Dayton, Ohio, trees, neighbors and other annoyances block my antennas from pointing at the moon. But our house on Beaver Island sits right on Lake Michigan, facing east, and is perfectly positioned for moonbounce attempts. And I'm going to make some...
So, Moonbounce Bay seemed like a nice name for the house, and now you know there's more to it than the recollection of an old song.
