An interesting article in today's "ARESv at yahoogroups.com Digest" about the
"XO Laptop" project and its potential use for digital emergency
communications [extremely low power consumption].
I "googled" on "XO laptop" and discovered the "One Laptop Per Child"
worldwide initiative for underdeveloped countries. Very interesting--Check
it out. See Digest article (#3) below.

We are in the process of negotiating a memorandum of understanding
with our local Red Cross chapter.
If you have a MOU with your local red cross chapter, I have two
questions...
1) Are your ARES members considered Red Cross volunteers by your local
chapter, and
2) Does the Red Cross provide any kind of liability or other insurance
coverage for ARES members supporting the Red Cross during a disaster?
Thanks in advance--

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Oregon
Scientific, announced a voluntary recall of 4 NOAA Weather Radio models.
These NOAA Weather Radios are being recalled as they could fail to
receive National Weather Service alert signals in certain areas of the
country. In the event of severe weather, this failure could put a
consumer's life and property at risk.
The models affected by this recall are.
WR103NX
WR108
WRB308
WRB308J
Additional information on this recall, including photographs of the
affected models and information on contacting the manufacturer can be
found on the Consumer Products Safety Commission's website at

Has anyone been playing with the idea of getting a XO laptop and using
it for emergency digital communications? The biggest issue with any
computer is the power draw. 3 days with of battery power simply isn't
practical and generators carry certain liability and logistic
problems. That would tend to limit the situations where digital
communications could be deployed.
But the XO laptop (used to be the $100 laptop) will take power between
5 - 25V and is limited to 15W. (I've seen claims that it averages
2W). It's also rugged and spill proof. Yes, it does have a sound
card and runs a stripped down Linux.
