If you want unbroken measurement series you want to ensure isolation 
such that you get the capacity for sure and not statistically. All of a 
sudden you have opened up a new bag of issues and configuration 
problems. It can be handy, but for continuous measurements isolation and 
well understood failure mechanisms is what you want.

Ethernet/IP can be handy, but it is not a universally good tool.
