My recommendation is to go for a PRS10 as your first unit.

It is well documented, has a nice serial port where you can peek
and poke at the unit and it is likely to last for a few decades
with great performance.

Yes, I know they're twice as expensive on eBay, but they are worth it
because you are almost guaranteed to get something you can use.

Once you've had some fun with that and learned the ropes, then you
can start to use the lower-grade and consequently cheaper telecom
Rb's for any subsequent needs.
