Piscataway, NJ -- John Vig, consultant, System Planning Corporation;
Colts Neck, New Jersey, USA, has been selected as 2008 IEEE
president-elect. Pending acceptance of the Teller's Committee report
by the IEEE Board of Directors, Vig will begin serving as IEEE
president on 1 Jan. 2009. He will succeed 2008 IEEE President Lewis
Terman, IBM Research Emeritus. IEEE is the world's leading
professional association for the advancement of technology.
Of the 281,045 ballots mailed, 43,916 valid ballots were returned
(15.63 percent). This compares to the 2006 return of 13.97 percent.
All results are unofficial until the IEEE Board of Directors accepts
the report of the Teller's Committee during the November meeting
series.
The other candidates for 2008 IEEE president-elect were Marc T.
Apter, senior information assurance specialist, EG&G Technical
Services, Arlington, Va., USA, and Pedro A. Ray, president, Ray
Architects Engineers, San Juan, Puerto Rico. All three candidates
were nominated by the IEEE Board of Directors. Of the members who
voted, 11,068 selected Apter, 13,626 selected Ray, and 17,805
selected Vig.
Vig, an IEEE Fellow, has been an active IEEE volunteer for over 30
years and has spent his professional career working as an
electronics engineer - performing and leading research and
development programs in U.S. government research laboratories. A
member of the IEEE Board of Directors from 2002-2003 and in 2005,
other past IEEE Board positions include vice president, Technical
Activities, 2005; director, Div. IX, 2002-2003; Investment
Committee, 2002-03; Investment AdHoc Committee, 2003; Marketing and
Sales Committee, 2005-07; Trust and Communications Working Group,
2003.
A main proponent of the establishment of the IEEE Sensors Council,
Vig served as its founding president in 2000-2001. The Council
spawned the IEEE Sensors Journal in 2001, and a conference, IEEE
SENSORS, which attracts 600 participants annually. Prior to the
formation of the IEEE Sensors Council, he was an active member of
the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society,
and served as president from 1998-1999. Vig has chaired several IEEE
conferences, been awarded 55 patents and has authored or co-authored
more than 100 publications, including nine book chapters.
Having retired from his position in February 2006 at Ft. Monmouth,
New Jersey, USA, after 36 years of service, Vig currently works as a
technical consultant to the Systems Planning Corporation, and serves
on the Technical Advisory Board of a venture-capital funded startup,
SiTime Corporation. Additionally, since 1997, Vig has served as a
technical advisor to program managers at the U.S. Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency for programs ranging from micro- and
nanoresonators to chip-scale atomic clocks.
