  That's odd.  Recall  there  is  about a  minute  of  silence  at the
  beginning of the tape. This makes you think it is blank.

  Windows Media  Player  9  grabs the file when  you  click  on  it in
  Explorer, but  it  only  gives the sound and no  image  on  my Win98
  machine. I have to load the avi file manually into VLC.

  Do you have VideoLan? It's at http://www.videolan.org/

  VLC is free, cross-platform, and shows the video much  smoother than
  other multimedia players I have tried (MPlayer, FLVPlayer,  etc.) If
  you don't have it already, give it a try.

  But that still doesn't help with the rest of the Messenger lectures.

  I think  there's no choice but to install Silverlight. I  don't want
  it on my main machine since MS is such a huge target for malware, so
  I'll put  it  on a clone in VBox or VMware later  when  I  have some
  time.
