Mike,
We're launching a weather balloon. Using APRS to track it. The balloon will easily reach altitudes in excess of 65535 ft. The tracker only accepts nmea input.

Most gps units won't work over that number, for obvious reasons. Why bother to code beyond that number as few people will need it as well as the export restriction on altitude and speed. 

Sounds crazy, but then again, it's time nuts..
