Free low-end SSL certs are available from startssl
(https://www.startssl.com/). I installed one the other day on my
private site. The only problem I've seen (and this isn't much of a
complaint) is that the startssl root cert isn't trusted by default by
IE6 on win2k (I'm sure updating the roots would probably fix
that). Anything later should be fine.
