Switched bridge or sensor excitation is an old technique used to gain
greater sensitivity for a given power without undue power dissipation
in the sensor itself.  The later can be important to prevent self
heating in a temperature sensor.

I suspect you could get most if not all of the benefit by using a
lock-in amplifier which relies on synchronous demodulation to lower
the noise level.  Linear Technology application note 43 page 24 shows
a good example.  There are also several switched bridge examples in
the same application note.
