MFI applies to hardware that connects to the lightning cable (for the most part). BTLE is actually a nice end-run around MFI - it’s completely open, so far as I am aware. There are lots of maker projects out there that have used iOS to control some homemade gizmo via BTLE, and all they’ve had to do is join the Apple dev program enough to be able to load their own app on their own phone.
