[time-nuts] Scanning darkly

Having too much trouble scanning a fifties manual's photographs.
The photos of chassis parts are grayscale, of course. No color
copiers in those days, at least, not for most manuals.

Epson 3170 and Smart Panel aren't smart enough. HP 3970 understands
"descreen" to get rid of Moiré herringbone, but can't get size or
brightness right. Ten hours of messing with trying to guess where
the programmer put things or wants me to do is enough.

Can anyone provide enlightenment on scanning grayscale accurately?
