Nope,  they specifically were talking about the external wiring and the polarity reversal switch used to null out the effects of thermal EMF's.  Their best performance was with a plated, stranded wire...  the exact opposite of what one would expect.  One has to empirically determine the wiring/connections that minimize thermal EMFs.

This might not be the case if there were no joints in the system all ALL wiring was of the same pure element...  which it is not and will never be...

So, perhaps the debunking you are referring to has to do with the actual connection to that extremely cold
surface.  In no way does that debunk accumulated wisdom for a normal environment.
